Help and support for The Newz Tuel. The Newz Tuel is a News Aggregator, also known as RSS aggregator or new reader, etc.
RSS is used for many reasons, but for our purposes the main reason is to supply content about a particular subject(s) that will update fairly often.
RSS is another way of receiving information, like browsers read webpages and email lets you communicate with other people. RSS is best used to send information that is updated often.
For example, news about your favorite sports team or your local area.
These individual RSS files are called "feeds", or "pheeds", as we like to refer to them. ( www.pheeds.com )
An "aggregator" is something that brings many things together, in the case of The Newz Tuel, it brings together a bunch of RSS pheeds.
Bascially, instead of you going to website after website looking for updates about your favorite topics, day afet day, The Newz Tuel will goes out automatically on a schedule and "aggregates" (brings all your updated RSS pheeds together) and displays them in an easy to read manner.
The key to truly getting the most out of The Newz Tuel is knowing:
1. Where to find the best pheeds.
2. How to add them to The Newz Tuel.

A New perspective on Newz Tuel---by Tom EleamBasically the Newz Tuel is a RSS aggregator or news reader if you pefer similiar to Blog Bomber but not quite.
Our uses for it here is to supply content about a subjet that is updated often. This tuel will save you time in searching for feeds or as we call them pheeds.
Ok let's get started. First you notice on the page left hand side Newz Tuel Categories: followed by Add New Category: Here you enter the category. I used marketing as a category. You can have any category you want.
After you slect the category you want to find the pheeds a great source for finding pheeds is Kurt's pheeds.com and Kurt's wikki http://rss.pheeds.com/
After you select which feed pertaining to the category you want you entr the pheed ( Ah Kurt's goet me saying pheeds) In the " Add Custom feeds to this category". Make sure when you do this you are adding the rss pheed title that is in the address bar. See example below notice the rss after blogdigger.com other wise you won't get any results. You can add more than one pheed url just be sure after each url you enter the other url on the next line. It could get confusing as the second pheed taken from Kurt's wikki is three lines and it works BTW. When you get to a url like this just het the enter key after you paste in the url so that a next line would be created.
After you've done entering the pheeds click on the Add custom feeds button, and wait for the Newz Tuel Status: to finish.

Your pheeds will be displayed under Category: marketing -
which is located to the right. Here is what some of the pheeds looked like for a
particular category I searched for from the wikki:
- The New York Times
The New York Times
Main Page | | Alphabetical index
The New York Times
The New York Times is an influential international daily newspaper published in New York City, New York.
Nicknamed "The Old Gray Lady" or The Times, this newspaper was founded as The New-York Daily Times in 1851 by Henry J. Raymond and George Jones as a sober alternative to the more partisan newspapers that dominated the New York journalism of the time. In its very first edition on September 18, 1851, the paper stated, "We publish today the first issue of the New-York Daily Times, and we intend to issue it every morning (Sundays excepted) for an indefinite number of years to come." The paper's current slogan is "All The News That's Fit To Print."Adolph Ochs acquired the Times in 1896 and under his guidance the newspaper achieved an international scope, circulation, and reputation. It is currently owned by The New York Times Company, in which descendants of Ochs, principally the Sulzberger family, maintain a dominant role.
The Times enjoys the reputation of being a generally reliable source of news. The editorial position of the Times is often regarded as liberal in its interpretation of social issues and events. However, it does have a mix of editorial columnists, ranging in approximate political position (left to right): Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, and Thomas Friedman, William Safire and David Brooks, formerly of The Weekly Standard magazine.
In 2003, the Times admitted to journalism fraud committed over a span of several years by one of its reporters, Jayson Blair, and the general professionalism of the paper was questioned.

Steve,Number of RSS items is controlled by the publisher of the pheed.
Some, such as the pheeds.com search allow you to contol the number of items used:
http://www.pheeds.com/bib/search.cgi?keywords=jimi+hendrix&format=rss&pre=5&suf=125&id=&template=advanced&results=30
You can change "results=30" to any other number, within reason. If you set it to 100 and theirs only 2 results, you'll only get two results.
However, each RSS pheed is different and not all allow have this option, although all Bomb scripts that generate RSS have this attrbute.
Also, The Newz Tuel only shows 3 items from each pheed on the "main" category page. To view all times, for each pheed click the link:

Kurt,Thanks for the clarification.
I purchased ZZ Tuelz and BuyItBomb the other day and am still trying to get the latter set up (ZZ works fine, but I'm still trying to figure out the page naming scheme). I'd like to make an additional purchase, but I'll need someone to do the installations.
If possible, I'd like someone to give me a call. I need to purchase the CherryBomb, I'll need information about a hosting service (perhaps a virtual server), and again, someone to do the installations.
When you get a minute, send me an email at info@buyfromart.com or if you'll send me a number, I can call you today and take it from there.

Hi Kurt,1. Is there a way to edit the category name, rss feeds, update frequencyc etc after the item is created?
2. Under the "Add DayPop, Newstrove and Feedster Pheeds:", is there any way for us to add more listings (msn, yahoo etc) to the existing lists ourselves?
Thanks,

Just purchased your ZZtuelz. I'm currently in the process of finding some RSS feeds to use on my site, but in a lot of cases, not every topic that comes as a result of the feed is relevant to my site. For example, let's say I sell pet care products for dogs and cats. I don't want news coming in about rabbits and birds. Is there any way that I can use ZZtuel to just nab specific headlines with certain predetermined keywords (which I specify) and update my site using that criteria? Many thanks!

Sherice,You can use the keyword tag in ZZ Tuel to limit your results to specific keywords.
However, the keyword tags aren't limited to only the "headline", but also include the body text of the RSS item. I think you'll find with more experience that limiting keywords to only the title would really limit the amount of content available.
For more about how to control the keyword/search tag in ZZ, please see the ReadMe.

I have finally "graduated" from 'reading mode' to 'experimental mode.'I grabbed one pheed from pheed.com and it was pretty complete. In fact, a bit too complete.
My question is: Is there a way to "cut" some of the pheed from being posted?
OK, I used the keyword "chocolate." My version of Kurt's "cokes." LOL Anyway, there's more there than I want to use.
Is there a "shortening" procedure I'm unaware of?

Not if you use the pheed from the page. However, if you use the search results you can adjust the amount of "content".
Just copy/paste the first 8-12 words from a page into the advanced search box and fill out the options.

Kurt, is there a "limit" as to how many "RSS feeds" and categories that Newz can handle (which will then get pulled into ZZ)? Maybe a better question would be... how many feeds/pheeds per category is advantageous/optimal for both speed, and a good mix of content (5, 10, 100)?My apologies, Kurt, if this has been address elsewhere, but I've done a search and cannot find the answer and/or a suggestion anywhere.

Andre,I'm positive there is a limit, I just haven't reached it, nor has it been reported.
However, "time" seems to be the "limiter", more than quantity....By this I mean some RSS sources are very slow and The Newz Tuel can only update as quickly as the RSS sources can deliver the pheeds.
For example, if Daypop hangs, then that will obviously slow down The Newz Tuel.
With this said, I believe it is far better for your PC to be slow, than for the "hanging" to occur server-side, where you pages (and revenue) are located...And the "hanging" is dependant on the resource, not the program used to collect the pheeds, such as BlogBomb or The Newz Tuel.

I think I have searched all the threads I can see that may relate to finding and adding the best feeds to the Newz Tuel.
I just don't seem to be able to find the answer to item 1 above.
I've clicked on one link in which Kurt replies to Tom and says 'all will be revealed' on a link in the post, but that just gives a 'Script Error' - contact Site Administrator.
There is a link to the Pheeds.com forum in the Newz Tuel, which when clicked, takes me to a page that says 'Access Denied'. Please contact Site Administrator.
Can anyone tell me how I do this please?
I don't seem to be able to find that information either
Any help that could be offered to a 'noobie', would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Ian

#20, The Newz Tuel - Same feeds in multiple categories?
Posted by Andre on Jun-21-05 at 05:27 PM

Kurt, is there any way that I can tweak Newz to allow me to display the same RSS/Zon feed in multiple categories?Basically... I have two sites on the same topic. One of my content sources is Amazon where I have two custom Zon templates (each displays the information in a different way).
I want each site to pull info from a different (as the template is different) Newz/Category... however News only seems to render the fist feed.
If I try and add that same feed, but with a different template, to another Newz category... nothing happens
Is this limitation/restriction by design? More importantly, is there a way for me to get around it

It's not intentional and not sure why The Newz Tuel would think the two URLs are the same.
If changing the paramters in the URL, shich is necessary to call another template, doesn't work, then the only thing I can think of as a work around is a second install of Zon.

Hi Kurt,Is there a way to tell Newz to NEVER automatically update a pheed? What if I set the "Update every ___ hour(s)" to 0 (zero)?
This is for a datafeed that I'll be updating manually so I don't want/need Newz to waist bandwidth with unnecessary updates.
For now, I've set the update frequency to 8640 hours...

Kurt,Where are the pheeds stored in the Newz Tuel? I'd like to be able to copy and paste them into another program that I'm using to run an experiment.
It seems that the only want to get the feeds is to run the update and copy and paste them from the text field as they appear. Is there a quicker way to grab all of the pheeds that have been entered?

Del,Unfortunately, The News Tuel uses an internal database. In the next update, I'll have Kirill make sure we have access to the pheeds, although that does't help you at this point.
I have't tried this, but you may want to exit tuelz.exe, then restart and go to The Newz Tuel and click "check all". Let it run, making sure it has checked all pheeds, it may take some time depending on how many pheeds you have entered...
Tuelz may write the pheeds in the tuelz.log file (which is a text file).
Paste the log file into LINEZ and "cut lines containing":
http
You may haave to edit the list by hand to only get the RSS pheeds...
That may do it for you, but not sure if tuelz does log the RSS urls or not...

Thanks, Kurt. I'll give that a try.I've noticed a couple of other things that you might want to consider in your next update. When you run a search using Feedster, for example, you're given a list of feeds that match that search. They tend to be either very relevant or not relevant at all, however it seems you have to delete the whole listing of results in order to get rid of the one you don't want.
Also, I'd like to see a way to block results from certain domains. Let's face it, a lot of what Blogger yields nowadays is keyword garbage and blog and ping traps that you don't want to help the creators syndicate. It would be nice to ban blogspot.com or any other domain from appearing in any of the Newz listings that we use to insert into ZZ or whatever. I've rarely found any useful content there.
I was looking at fitness equipment pheeds a moment ago and thought I found a relevant blogger blog until ZZ updated my pages again. There were gay porn listings on my exercise site because some guy's (or gal's) blog had fitness equipment links and then gay porn links. sheesh!

Hi,I think my newz tuel is broken. I created a category and have added pheeds but I can not see any of them. I tried adding pheeds via the keyword function, I tried installing custom pheeds and eveything else. I even had Castle trying to figure it out. He had me reinstall tuelz and the newz tuel as well, but still not working with the category created.
I am, however, able to add pheeds to other categories. Any suggestions?

Gil,I need more info, like:
What are you naming the category? Have you tried using another name for the category?
Specifically, what is happening? Do you see the status bar reporting anything?
What are the URLs you are trying to install?
Do you have the Tag Cloud turned on and aren't waiting for it to process? It can take a while if you have a lot of pheeds.
If you still have trouble, exit tuelz.exe, restart tuelz.exe, check for the problem, if it exists, open tuelz.log and email the contents to me, but only AFTER you've checked the other things.

Both of these upgrades are greatly appreciated. I was planning to go through my feeds and weed out the bad ones. (I should still do this but it is not as urgent.)
For testing purposes a clean copy of Tuelz with no feeds. This is useful but did mean I had to turn my regular Tuelz off, now I will no longer have to.
And the biggest plus of course is now my Newz Tule is constantly trying to find missing feeds.

This is an excellent addition which is very valuable to anyone who uses feeds. Makes all the Tuelz that use feeds more valuable and easier to use.

Hi Ernie,First, I edited our messages to remove your RSS pheed URL to protect its "privacy".
I added your RSS pheed to my Newz Tuel and it worked just fine.
The best I can suggest is to try again...Maybe your connection is timing out or something?
Maybe post in the Bombsquad (use the new Misc. Thread) and see if others can add it to their Newz Tuel?
If you get it to work, make sure to set the update time for a very long period, as it won't have to update very often after that point.
