"Scrubz"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-06 AT 04:28 PM (PST)

Coming Soon...

Scrubz is a Tuel that takes a bunch of RSS pheeds and lets you pick and chose which specific RSS items you want to use, edit and modify them to make them "your own", then merge them to generate a new, unique RSS pheed using on the highest quality resources.

Scrubz reads categories and imports RSS pheeds from the Newz Tuel. Please visit the Newz Tuel forum for help and questions about The Newz Tuel:
http://www.dombom.com/dcforum/DCForumID27/6.html

Scrubz ReadMe:

1. Click on The Newz Tuel

2. Create a new category

3. Input some RSS pheeds - Refer to The Newz Tuel thread for more info - http://www.dombom.com/dcforum/DCForumID27/6.html

4. Click the Scrubz link:
http://127.0.0.1:12345/scrubz/

- You should see a list of all the categories you have created in The Newz Tuel, along with a button "Create RSS pheed".

5. Click on the Category link for the category you just created.

6. Enter the RSS header info: (Note: You don't have to be perfect with this info, just need to enter something to have a complete RSS pheed.)
Link - Enter the URL to your page, blog or RSS pheed.
Title - What's the name of you page or blog?
Description - Enter a short description about your site/blog/pheed.

7. Fill in your FTP info where you are going to publish your pheed on the web so Scrubz can automatically FTP your pheed.

Note About FTP: If you plan on using the same website and folder for multiple feeds, make sure you name them something unique and not "index.rss", as you will overwrite your pheed each time you upload it...I suggest using a good keyword to use as your RSS file name:
keyword.rss

8. Click "Modify" button...You should be taken to a new page containing all the RSS pheeds in the corresponding Newz Tuel category.

9. Select the RSS items you want to include in your own pheeds. Each individual RSS item you have selected will be marked with a light purple background telling you "this item will be included".

Edit items, if desired or needed. You can do this before or after clicking the "ADD ITEM TO RSS PHEED" button.

10. After you have added and customized all the items you wish to include, just click the "UPLOAD RSS PHEED" button.

That's it...You've just created, modified and uploaded your own custom RSS pheed!

Next time you want to update this pheed you won't need to fill out your RSS header or your FTP info and will just select and modify news items for your pheed updates.

1. "The More... Button"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-28-06 AT 09:38 AM (PST)

If you notice, there is a "more..." button associated with each pheed.

Let's say you make a category in Newz Tuel called "desserts".

In the desserts category, you enter three RSS pheeds:
pie
cake
cookies

Each of these three pheeds probably has 10-15 news items each, and could have hudreds.

Instead of showing all 15 items, Scrubz (and the Newz Tuel for that matter) only show the THREE NEWEST ITEMS on the main category page.

We do it this way so your main category page doesn't have tons and tons of items for you to scroll through.

If you want to see all the items for a pheed, just click on the More... button.

So be sure to notice whether you are on the Main cateogry page that lists all pheeds (pie, cake, cookies) that shows the three newest items, or if you are on the page for a single pheed like, "cake" which will show all the items from the cake pheed only.

2. "HTML Code"

You may notice some html code to the left of the description for each RSS item.

I didn't add an html editor to Scrubz, but you can click/hold/drag any of the html code over to the input form, you don't even have to copy/paste.

This will make adding some basic html tags to your items.

3. "Watch Redirect URLs"

Both the Google and Yahoo news sources add their own redirect URLS to the start of each news item, such as:

http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=T&ct=us/1-0&fd=R&url=http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06239/716347-237.stm&cid=0&ei=AkPyRIC9HIWkpQLZjLm2BQ

I suggest if you use an item from Yahoo or Google that you remove the redirect link so that the link goes directly to the resource.

This way, Google/Yahoo don't know that you are using their links.

Yahoo really messes with the URLs. Not only do they add the redirect URL to the beginning of each link:
http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/search/las vegas/SIG=1292kcuf6/

They also mess with the actual syntax of the legit URL.

Notice the:
*http://

Should be:
http://

While correcting these links takes a few seconds each time, I feel it is worth the effort, as it isn't any of Google/Yahoo's business. We are just using their resources for research, not using their content.

I am having some of the items included in the newly created scrubz feed which were not "add item to rss pheed" and are not highlighted, but the items are in the 'category' used of that scrubz feed.

example: the rss pheed about solar eclipses from the san francisco exploratorium is not highlighted in light purple.
the solar eclipse pheed is found in the zz page that includes the rss pheed of the scrubz pheed.

Updated and edited info is not showing as being edited.

looks like the update problem had to do with I was not updating Newz Tuel with "update now". The updates are taking. tx yr reply.

Looks like I was modifying my zztuel tags in dreamweaver on the design side, not the code, and getting unwarranted characters in the code. Newbie-error!

Tx yr patience.

Will,

I believe this is the problem: With Scrubz, you have created an entirely new RSS pheed, which you haven't entered into either the Newz Tuel, or ZZ.

Since Scrubz is intended to work with all RSS programs, you need to upload the RSS pheed to a web site, then enter THE URL TO THE NEW PHEED into the Newz Tuel, then account for the new pheed in ZZ.

Scrubz does not change the content or pheeds in The Newz Tuel, it simply creates a new pheed. To use the new pheed, you have to enter it into Newz Tuel like any other RSS pheed. Just copy/paste the URL into the Custom Pheeds box.

I suggest you create a new category called "scrubz" where you can enter all of your own scrubz pheeds and update them from there.

PS...You can always FTP to your server and take a look at the RSS pheed, or use a browser, to check for updates. If the pheed is updating, the problem isn't with Scrubz but rather something else along the "production line".

Check the RSS pheed itself and see if Scrubz is updating the pheed correctly and don't use the output of another program for this test.

I re-edited post 8 and took out most of the info, cause I found the problems at my end. I did lose all the "selections" in that category from the previous day upon updating the newz for some unknown reason, but if you change the name for a new scrubz feed you would definitely not lose the old scrubz feed.

Will and Everyone...

If your pheeds in Newz Tuel update, you will lose any mods made in Scrubz. This is really dictated by logic becase the items you selected may no longer exist after the pheed is updated.

Plus, you would have to delete any selected pheed after each update, which is a pain.

Because of this, make sure you publish/upload your modifications ASAP.

And a reminder: To trouble shoot, look directly at the Scrubz pheed either via web browser or FTP. Do NOT look at the "output", as there are many other factors that are now in play, such as html editor, RSS appliaction (ZZ, BlogBomb, Carp) SSI tags, etc.

   Hi,

I have a basic question regarding Scrubz, in the RSS Pheed Header Info
where it asks for the link, do I add the .index.rss or do I add .html?

For example:
http://24-7-helpline.com/diets/index.rss or
http://24-7-helpline.com/diets/index.html

Thanks.

Taken from the ReadMe in the first post:

The output from scrubz contains this format:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

The feed validator returns an error stating:
Your feed appears to be encoded as "utf-8", but your server is reporting "US-ASCII"

This is when I named the page index.rss. I then tried index.rss.xml and got the same thing.

I then tried validating one of the pages generated by scrubz, page-5-2006-09-13.html and got the same message.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Gil,

I believe it is server side and need to hear from Kirill before I can be sure.

However, I did a google for the phrase and it turned up this:

http://reinventedsoftware.com/support/feederfaq.html

Scroll to the bottom and the last topic deals with this problem.

Also, are you installing the RSS url into an RSS reader (The Newz Tuel) or just using a web browser?

Thanks Kurt,

I read the info on that page and interpurted to mean that I need to add some MIME types to my server in order for it to read these pages. It also stated that "In practice, newsreader applications tend to ignore the MIME type when determining text encoding, preferring to check the processing instruction in the XML, if at all."

The pheed I used was generated using scrubz. I uploaded it to my server and first tried using it in blogbomb. I tried to view the html and ssi version and found no results. When I viewed the rss version I did however find it.

I then tried to use in on my projects via zz but again that did not work. Finally I inserted the url for this pheed into my Newz but I did not get anything.

I have been able to use scrubz to genrate pheeds for my projects its just this one is that is not working and/or validating. It is more than likely something I am doing wrong or not doing at all (oversight). I know the program works so I'll just keep trying and hopefully will not take up to much time here asking for help.

Thanks again.

Gil,

This is the type of info that is important when trouble shooting. Including this could have saved me 20 minutes.

If it is just one pheed and you know Scrubz is working, then you most likely have entered a bad character somewhere, probably when you edited an item.

I think you may ignore this error, but if you want to fix it, upload the following .htaccess file on your server:

AddCharset utf-8 .htm .html .xml .rss # you may add other extentions here

Thanks Kirill, I will try the .htaccess route. One question though, will adding this to an excisting .htaccess (one that is parsing ssi as html) continue to work? I hope so.

Kirill,
try this one http://24-7-helpline.com/index.rss
and yes, I know, from now on I will name all pheeds my keyword.rss instead of index.rss

Thanks

Hi Kirill, Kurt,

Please forget my last post regarding scrub and my pheeds not showing up. I found my mistake, inside my blogbomb script I made a foolish mistake, I forgot to add the .com to my url. Haste makes waste.

24. "RE: Scrubz - pretty easy"

I just used scrubz for the first time.

I already have pleanty of feeds, in the news tuelz so that was no problem.

I choose to work with a feed from blogsearch.google.com, so I new it had plenty of feeds with-in it.

Since i have the option of using this feed in ZZ tuelz to create an html page, it was nice to see that you could work with each individual feed to create, for example: H1 tags, which are great food for search engines.

You could add attitional attributes to change color or styles.

Overall another great tool.

However, because I am lazy, I will be using it in a limited manner.

25. "Opening a new window...."

   Hi Kurt,

I have been using scrubz and it's great.

I wanted to have a new browser window open when someone clicks on the title. This way I can keep them on my site.

I tried putting this in the URL section but it doesn't work. It goes to a page not found on my website.

--------------
<a href="http://techreport.com"; target="_blank">http://techreport.com
-------------

Any suggestiongs?

Thanks and blessings,

Ed

Sorry Ed, I can't be of any help as I didn't think of this when designing Scrubz, although it "should" still work, but obviously it isn't.

   Ed,

I had this same issue and here's how I managed to get the links to open in a new window.

(Kurt may want to cover his eyes for this one, because I used CaRP to display the feeds. Don't know if BlogBomb can do it as well, since I don't own that tuel.)

This piece of formatting in CaRP allows the link to open in a new window.

CarpConf('linktarget',1)

This page. . .

http://carp.docs.geckotribe.com/tips/2004_09_01_archive.php

. . . goes into more detail on how to do it and alter the new windows size.

Hope this helps.

Hey Ed...

Despite Ernie's poor taste in RSS programs (lol), he does bring up a good point and stimulated my memory a bit...

Scrubz doesn't control any formatting, and you'll need to do this in the html output program of your choice, such as BlogBomb Xtreme 2???

31. "using video"

As I use more and more video, I find this probram will be invaluable.

For one in any give topic there are just not a ton of videos currently being submitted.

So, it would not be a big job adding say 10 videos per sitting.

Example: I am building a site about dogs. Mostly PLR for dog recipes.

But I am adding a blog. Now, most automatic blogs built using nothing but RSS feeds, are just considered search engine food, and most people that visit, will not visit a second time.

So, how can I get repeat visitors?

Well, in the case of a dog site, I can add themed videos for my visitors. Yes, they can go to youtube and search for dog vidoes. But, I plan to make it easy, by putting many of the funny dog videos in one place, my blog.

Scrubs helps with this by allowing me to comment on the videos, but more importantly, I can easily add to each post, links that make me money. Such as links to the main page. For example: let's say a funny video features dogs eating. Then that is a good place to add a link or banner, to dog food.

Comments appreciated.

Hey Kelvin,

Sounds like a very creative use for Scrubz...

Have you tried the same concept using www.Podzinger.com to find podcasts about the same niche? Along with Scrubz, these other resources could really make for high-quality multi-media pages.

   Hi Kurt,

I had not tried it on podzinger yet. I am working on a couple of more video ideas.

And I just found someone, who works from home, and will work cheap.
So, next month I hope to start her on simple items for me. In exchange for a little cash, and a little IM coaching. ( sounds like an intern)

Bought Scubz via a WSO, really like the concept and want to use it to provide content on a number of blogs. I know I'm being a bit thick here but I have a few questions:

I can generate the feed file - keyword.rss - but how do I display that feed on my blog homepage?

Can I archive the content, and display new content when updated?

thanks

Tony

Hi Tony...

>I can generate the feed file - keyword.rss - but how do I
>display that feed on my blog homepage?

That depends on each blog software/service. You'll need to refer to their docs. Or, post on a more popular forum and ask how to add RSS pheeds to _______ blog.

Scrubz just creates the RSS pheed, how it is used and inserted is up to each service.

>Can I archive the content, and display new content when
>updated?

Yes you can but you'll need a program/script that allows for this.

My desktop program ZZ Tuel will do this for static html pages, and GodfatherBomb will do it server side. ZZ Tuel LTD is free and allows one "archive project".

There are many other applications that will also archive RSS pheeds.

Hi Kurt, it's wordpress with a semiologicpro theme, there is an auto feed thing, but the only one i've successfully got to work has an xml extension, and it will not post to a "news" category for example - can i just change .rss to .xml ?

I have Godfatherbomb on my hard drive somewhere - I'll have to dig it out, and see if I can get my head around it. Not quite the newbie that I was when I bought it.

This might seem like an off the wall question Kurt, but wouldn't it help both you (in terms of support) and your customers, if you made some camtasia vids of the installation and use of your products?

I love the concepts of what you produce, but you almost seem to revel in the difficulty required to make them work.

You should be able to change to xml. I would even think it is better.

I've tried but have a problem with my PC that reboots itself whenever I do anything related to audio.

I don't "revel" in any perceived difficulty and I kind of resent that comment. You can have power or you can have ease. Rarely can you have both. As soon as something is easy, someone wants another feature/option. I will always choose power. Easy doesn't beat the competition.

I forgot how easy scrubz is to use.

And now that you can change any of your pages to rss with other rss tools, it can be quite a benefit.

But more specifically, Scrubs easily creates rss on any of your own domains, plus others you can ftp to. Think silver and tin sites.

For me. As an example, I run an autoresponder service.

I just quickly looked at ezine articles, and google blogs to find "autorepsonders". choose a couple of feeds.

YOu can see them here.
http://www.followup101.com/articles/index.rss

First thing to note, is that the feed is from my (your) own domain.

As the sales page describes for Scrubs, you can use it to ease writers block.

# 2: I have over 100 PLR articles about autoresponders. So, for any feed I can add just about add any content I want, So, if i see a "
Secrets of Writing Winning Autoresponder Series", I can add a complete article to that feed, or just a response.

# 3: It works for any niche.

# 4: If you are in the wedding niche, and you have very weak article writing skills, you could go to google blog, search for 'wedding tips' or "how to', and you get 10 items. You could remove the feed titles and links and use 10 individual tips ( a sentence or 2 from each) and make a totally unique articles or feed to send out, by makeing a few edits.

# 5: It really is that easy.

I will show. Maybe tomorrow.

Kelvin

If you look at the link now, http://www.followup101.com/articles/index.rss

you will notice that there is now a full article placed in amongst the feeds from the other sources. In this article you will see that I placed 2 links back to my domain.

Now comes the hard work of submitting the RSS feed to several rss directories.
