Part 2: Linking, Articles, My Space, You Tube or What? There is currently much discussion about ethical means of attracting traffic, about quality content, about the best ways to improve ranking and whether it is better to link, write articles, blog, post on social bookmarking sites like Myspace, mass create sites, pages, blogs or whatever. From a strategic point of view you would use all methods as time and energy permitted, since while one method may work better today it is impossible to know what will do better tomorrow.
In reality all the methods are similar. They are simply a mass means of attracting attention to your site. Even linking and reciprocal linking have this aspect about them, and that has been their primary benefit.
Some methods currently work better than others, what is called the 80/20 rule, but what works best today may not work best tomorrow. The best strategy is to consider and if possible use all options and never have all your eggs in one basket, while giving priority to the methods that currently work best.
In the future there will certainly be new, different and quite possibly better methods of attracting spiders and people to your web sites, at least for a time. But I suspect that all methods will consist of some method of broadcasting, including links, blogs, forums, social bookmarking, and any other practical broadcasting method that becomes available.
After all what is the first thing any new business has to do? Let people know it exists! It is fine to speak of reputation, and quality, and word of mouth but for the public none of these things exist until people know about you. In other words we all need traffic first!
An established high quality restaurant may not ever need to advertise. A brand new restaurant, no matter how good it may be, probably will. Turning one’s nose up at mass marketing methods of SEO, or site promotion, is akin to turning one’s nose up at any form of advertising. It is all fine and good if you are the established but what it you are not?
Logically you will do whatever is practical and works to attract the traffic you need. This includes articles, mass blogging, social bookmarking, youtube, forums, massive site and page creation, and any other method that can drive and attract traffic.
Any advertising is Spam and the biggest and most respected names in business, including google don’t hesitate to advertise. Logically as marketers we should use all methods at our disposal that work for us.
