It's the 5th, But it's still the "weekend of the 4th" so I guess that's close enough.
While there's not much going on, down South, we did have someone fire off a bunch of aerial rocket bombs last night, somewhere near. I wore my Harley "4th of July" shirt yesterday and a lot of people commented on it. Yes, they know the meaning of the day down here but just don't celebrate it as we do. My whole holiday schedule has been upside down for the last 7 years now! There's really only two holidays that coincide, Christmas and New Years. They have more holidays down here than you can imagine! Almost one a week. LOL
My point is, one need not be "in country" or have huge fireworks displays or hear oratories all day to bask in the pride of being an American on the 4th of July. We have pride that we've made it this far. And it's not just about the troops in the Middle East, either. It's about every son and daughter of America that raised arms in defense of their country and/or the countries of others. And let's not forget civilians that also "face the gauntlet" in the name of "service to country." Rifles are not the only weapon we use. Knowledge, science and assistance are also our weapons.
And, especially, take a moment to read each name affixed to the US Declaration of Independence. For it was these few men who started it all and REALLY put their lives on the line. Reread that document, in it's entirety, to understand WHY we have a 4th of July.
It makes the birthday cake that much more sweeter!
