"Kurt's Quick Keyword Research"

Get a list of keywords

Go to google and do a search for your main keyword

Scroll to the bottom of the SERP and copy the 10 "Searches related to" keywords given. Add to list.

Next, go to this Free Online Wonder Wheel Scraper:
http://dxjones.com/wonder/wheel.php

Enter the same keyword (or a similar one) and enter 2 levels.

Sort the list and remove any duplicates

Paste list into the Inz Tuel and run Inz.

Chose the keywords with the lowest competing pages.

Optional: Repeat the process with a few other related keywords.

After you have selected the keywords with the lowest competition, write pages and articles around these keywords, changing your "main" keyword from page to page and article to article, working as many of the keywords into content as possible for each page and/or article.

Try to use as many of the keywords as possible, focusing on those with the weakest competition.

Wonder Wheel question:

I did a search for chocolate.

And I did as suggested using INZ Tuelz, and the dxjones site.

funny chocolate facts - results 1 page
chocolate facts - 36,900 pages

Separately I ran the following:

allintitle: "funny chocolate facts" results 1
allintitle: "fun chocolate facts" results 19,200

NOTE: when using 2 levels for dxjones wonder wheel results, the one with the most pages, "fun chocolate facts" did not show up.

So, the question is, to your knowledge, does the wonder wheel pick the most often searched for term, or just the term that it thinks most likely matches the search.

without analyzing, say wordtracker or adwords, it appears that " funny " actually gets the most searches, but page builders most often used "fun" instead.

With just a little more research it seems I answered my own question.

Using google adwords external tool, I got the following results.

google adwords global monthly searches

fun chocolate facts 1,600 880

funny chocolate facts 210 73

Per google, 'fun chocolate facts' received almost 8 times the queries than did 'funny chocolate facts', yet there are 19,899 more pages devoted to 'funny chocolate facts'.

To my simple mind, this says to sell my chocolate ebook, using the word facts, I should start working on the term 'fun' chocolate facts, because I should be able to rank for it quickly, and it's what people are searching for, with little in the way of SEO optimized pages.

When I say optimized, I have not checked the PR ranking, or incoming links. Just the basic allin: features .

Hey Kelvin,

This is a good question: What criteria does Google use for the Wonder Wheel? And my own, what makes it different than the "related searches" feature?

I'm really not sure, and in this case it probably isn't a big deal.

There's actually different SEO strategies for different projects. If the goal is to create mini-sites around very small micro-niche, heavliy targted keywwords are needed.

However, if we're building larger, more content-heavy authority type sites, the goal is more to use as many keyords as possible. And this is the strategy where we can use the Quick Keyword Research strategy.

Our goal for this isn't to find the best keyword for a page, but rather a bunch of keywords we can use on a bunch of pages, and especially use them on the same page.

If we can up with a list of keywords like:
big red squares
small blue rectangles
medium green circles

The goal really is to use each of these keywords as many times as possible. This list is keywords is really more about the things you write about than keyword research.

The use of Inz is only to find the "easiest" ones. I just "weight" the better Inz keywords and use them more often in page titles, anchor text, html tags and actual content.

This is a good strategy for when using the "mega page" strategy, where you put a lot of stuff on a single page, like on this thread:
http://www.dombom.com/dcforum/DCForumID33/662.html

And if you go to this page:
http://shysky.com/dyi-solar-energy.html

...You will see a "mega page", but as I explained elsewhere, I didn't set up Shysky in an SEO friendly way and originally wanted it to be a private site.

But take that page's style and apply this Quick Keyword strategy to determine what the topics on the page should be. And for the keywords that aren't topics, try to work a bunch of them into the text in a "natural" way.

Thanks Kelvin,

The server was down due to a "power outage". It's back up now...
