Do you want to become a linking and SEO expert? I'm not talking about the want-to-bes, but the best of the best when it comes to getting links and higher rankings? Let's jump right in and start off with some advanced linking concepts...
You'll hear the "amature" SEOers use the word "natural" a lot...They'll spout off about getting too many links too quickly isn't "natural. But what is natural? And more importantly, how might the search engines such as Google try to decide what is natural?
Before I answer, I've been active in SEO since 1996 and have as much experience as anyone. My customers over the years include some of the biggest names in Internet marketing. Even though you may not have heard of me, I've created a number of innovations that have been so widely copied that they are now common place.
Back to "natural"...Truly advanced SEoers and linkers are aware of a couple of concepts that the search engines, including Google, very likely use when they try to determine the value of links:
1. Link Velocity
2. Link Decay
Link velocity is the speed at which a site or page acquires new links. Weak SEOers believe getting links too fast is "unnatural" and that Google will penalize a site that gathers links too quickly.
The real truth is just the opposite, that a site that is quickly gaining links is "hot" and popular. This is easy to track and it makes more since than building links "too fast" isn't natural. What if you were on Oprah and she posted a link to your site? Don't you think that you'd get links very quickly, and these links would be natural? You could easily have 10,000's of links basically over-night naturally.
Another problem with the "link too fast" theory is that if true, you could use this to knock your competitors off the top spots in the rankings...All you would need to do is buy the latest link spam software and blast away at their sites. This would make it way too easy to sabotage others' sites.
Link Decay is sort of the opposite of link velocity and is the theory that how fast you lose links influences your rankings. If you think about it, this makes sense. If your site gets 1000 links really fast, then a month later only has 500 links, and a month after that, it only has 100 links, we may assume that other web masters have been deleting links to your site.
While the noobs declare linking too fast is why rankings drop, experts are
more likely to say this is a factor of link velocity slowing down and/or
a case of excessive link decay causing your rank to fall, not some noobie
theory about what's "natural".
The truth is, you need to get links quickly, keep growing and get your links to "stick" if you want long-lasting high search engine ranks!

Another important factor when creating link campaigns is to use a variety of different linking resources. There's a number of link resources for sale now that are pretty good, but they use the same type of links.
They find a pattern in the resources, then use the search engine to locate more opportunities using the same type of resource. For example, a search for "powered by vbulletin" will return a long list of forums you can use to create links. Most links "experts" selling link lists use this very method.
The problem is, Google can use the same patterns. To make matters worse, they sell the same exact list to all of their customers, so hundreds and even thousands of folks are use the exact same sites to get links as every other customer uses.
